Thai people know that Sukhothai was well known of the first flourish kingdom of Thailand and not far from Sukhothai is the Si Satchanalai Historical Park which I am proud to present. In addition, the historical park has variety sculpture styles because each temple in Si Satchanalai Historical Park has various construction styles. I think, even you are in the different mood during the trip or tired, but you will appreciate about the wonderful enormous old kingdom and you will not believe in the sight of ruin temples if you visit here. I used to visit the park many times, when I was young but I never interested it. At that time, I wondered why my parents took their photos with old stone constructions. However, when I am adult and visited there, I understand why my parents like to visit here. I visited the historical park on the last day of the last year. Furthermore, I will show you how Si Satchanalai Historical Park is amazing for you to visit.

These are many historical temples in the Si Satchanalai Historical Park, but the three temples that I believe that they are the most beautiful and remain an old completed construction, those temples are Wat Chang Lom, Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo and Wat Nang Phraya.
Wat Chang Lom
Elephant sculptures
Wat Chang Lom was built in Sukhothai period 14th century A.D. It is a large Buddhism monastery which located at center of Sri Satchalai ancient town. The main stupa of Wat Chang Lom is around shaped stupa which indicated art influence from Sri Lanka. The base is high and square. The front the base has 8 round relief elephant sculptures, and the other sides feature 9 elephant sculptures. There is an elephant sculpture at each corner of the base, totally 39 elephant sculptures around the base. Ii is believed that the temple is the remark of King Ramkhamhaeng about Buddha images for pay homage to them before re-bury.
Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo

Variety of architecture styles

This temple has been called Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo which means the temple with seven rows of chedis because there are many subordinate chedis here. The subordinate chedis are quite famous together with various styles of art such as Sri Lankan, Pagan and Srivijaya styles. A temple ditch originally surrounded the whole building complex. The late Prince Damrongrajanuphap suggested that the temple might be the royal graveyard of Sukhothai dynasty.

The stupas in Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo can be devided to 3 groups:
1. Lotus- bud shaped stupa. This style is unique of Sukhothai art. It has slender shape with high square base. The top of these stupas is in lotus bud-shaped stupa from with the decorative stucco in lotus petal pattern.
2. Prasat style stupa. It is the square shape stupa with a set of the tops and roofs. Prasat style in Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo display a lot of art influence from another cultures such as Khmer culture and Pagan culture.
3. Round stupa. This type is the stupa with a round bell-shaped structure and cone- shaped top. Some scholars suggested that the origin of this stupa style is the burial mound in ancient India.
Wat Nang Phraya
Sri Lankan Style
Wat Nang Phraya has the main chedi of Sri Lankan style which is the focus of this temple. One more thing, the temple has a famous historic structure that is a Vihara building due to the using of laterite blocks. It is believed that it related to the north of Ayutthaya styles in the middle of 15th century during the Chiang Mai army occupied the city and the Ayutthaya army took it back. The main monument (Chedi) might have elephant statue at its base at which the remaining elephant’s legs were found intact.

Si Satchanalai Historical Park is not only an ancient town. It is a wonderful place where Thai people can consider to an elaborate art in the Sukhothai kingdom that integrated our neighboring kingdoms’ art that is the reason why in each temple, we obviously see variety of sculpture and architecture styles . I was surprised and challenged how our ancestor can construct their town without modern equipments or technologies as well as I was lucky to have an excellent experience to visit this place. I think I will keep this wonderful experience in my memory forever. I was not disappointed to visit here and I believe that if you visit here, you will see many unexpected things, particularly the great ancient remains.
